His margin of victory over Roger Culhane in the 1978 Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party primary election was so small that a recount occurred. Although he was determined to be the primary election winner, he ran unsuccessfully as the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party endorsed candidate for the Minnesota House of Representatives in the 1978 election.
