He served as Dean of the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute at the University of Minnesota from 1997-2002.

He was a member of St. Joan of Arc's Parish in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

He died of gastric cancer at his son's home in Minnetrista, Minnesota. His funeral was held at the Basilica of St. Mary in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was buried in St. John's Cemetery in Collegeville, Minnesota.
