His name is spelled "Stahlman" in the 1871 and 1883 Minnesota Legislative Manuals. It is spelled "Stahlmann" on personal and business correspondence in the Minnesota Historical Society's collection of his papers.

He came to Minnesota in 1855.

His funeral was held on December 6, 1883 and he was buried in Elmhurst Cemetery in St. Paul, Minnesota.
