Toensing lists his last name as Shrewsberry. The Minnesota Legislative Manual, 1859 lists both Shrewsberry and Shrewsbury. The Minnesota Journal of the House, 1859-60 lists Shrewsbury. A relative says it is Shrewsbury.

He lived in Indiana, with his parents before he came to Independence Township, Minnesota in 1854 or 1855.
