He was an amateur geologist and several fossils (a gastropod and a trilobite) were named in his honor by the Official Geological and Natural History Survey of Minnesota in the 1890s.

He was a member of several fraternal organizations including the Masons, Oddfellows, and Elks.

He died in Austin, Minnesota.
