He came to New York in the spring of 1848.  He moved to Cincinnati, Ohio in 1849.  He came to the New Ulm area of Minnesota in the spring of 1856.  He moved to St. Paul, Minnesota in 1876.  He returned to New Ulm, Minnesota in 1880.
He was the first President of the Minnesota German Land Association.
He was a founder of New Ulm, Minnesota.
"William Pfaender's birth name was Jacob Wilhelm Pfaender, but according to the custom at the time, he went by his middle name Wilhelm, which became William in English-speaking countries."  (His great great granddaughter)
He was a member of the Turnverein movement.  The Turners were liberal freethinkers who believed in a healthy mind in a healthy body.  They promoted gymnastics.
