The Minnesota Legislative Manuals, 1865 and 1877 list his birth state as New Hampshire. Biographical Sketches of the Officers of the State Government of Minnesota and the 19th Minnesota State Legislature by C.L. Hall, 1877 lists Unity, New York.
He moved to Vermont in 1843, with his parents. He then moved to Indiana in 1852. He moved to Illinois in 1853. He returned to New Hampshire in 1856. He went to Grand Rapids, Michigan in November 1856. He came to Minnesota in September 1857.
