His father was a northwest voyageur and his mother was a Metis woman. The Minnesota Historical Society also identifies him as a Metis. They were descendants of Native Americans and Europeans.
He opened his fur trading post in St. Joseph, Minnesota Territory around 1843. It closed in 1873. St. Joseph was just north of Walhalla, North Dakota.
One source says he died in St. Joseph, Dakota Territory. Another says he died eight miles north of Walhalla, North Dakota in Manitoba, Canada.
