Toensing, the Minnesota Legislative Manual, 1860, and Biographical Sketches of the Officers of the State Government of Minnesota and the 19th Minnesota State Legislature by C.L. Hall, 1877 list his last name as Garrard. The Minnesota Legislative Manual, 1877 lists both Garrard and Girard.

He came to Minnesota for a few months in July 1854. He returned to Ohio, then went to Europe for two years. He moved to Frontenac, Minnesota in August 1858. He moved to Lake City, Wabasha County, Minnesota in 1870.
