He was raised in Indiana County, Pennsylvania. In 1843 he left Pennsylvania and moved to Rock Island, Illinois and then to La Crosse Wisconsin. After the Mexican War he returned to Pennsylvania. He moved to Minnesota and settled on a farm near Mound Prairie in 1855.
He worked in the pineries (pine forests) while in Wisconsin.
