He ran as a candidate for the Democratic-Farmer-Labor nomination in the 2006 campaign for Governor of Minnesota. He dropped out of the endorsement race in October 2005.

He was a cofounder of Global Volunteers in 1984. It's "a private, non-profit, non-sectarian, non-governmental organization engaging short-term volunteers on micro-economic and human development programs in close partnership with local people worldwide." (Global Volunteers Website)
