The Board administers the MN Fair Plan Act to make property, homeowners and commercial insurance available statewide.
From 1969 to approximately 1984, the Board was known as the FAIR Plan Governing Committee. The 1979 Legislature enacted and Governor Quie signed a bill providing for the appointment of four additional members to be named to address the problem of redlining, or restricting the availability of insurance based on the location of the property, was sponsored by Representative Jim Casserly and Senator Robert Tennessen. By 2011 FAIR plan insures roughly 7,800 properties in Minnesota.
9 members, the 5 member company directors are elected by the member companies, and 4 are appointed public directors. Also 1 non voting member who represents the Department of Commerce.
