The Minnesota Civil Defense Department became the Civil Defense Division of the Public Safety Department in 1969 (Laws of Minnesota 1969 chapter 1129, article 1, section 14), and the Emergency Services Division as of July 1, 1974 (Laws of Minnesota 1974, chapter 428). In 1987 (Laws of Minnesota 1987, chapter 71, section 2), the name is changed to Division of Emergency Management within the Public Safety Department.
