Crime Victim and Witness Advisory Council

Function: Develop guidelines for implementation and development of crime victim and witness programs in Minnesota and perform other advisory functions; reviews treatment of victims by the criminal justice system.
History: Public members added in 1986.

2013 Minn. Laws Chap. 125 Art. 1 Sec. 87 indicates that the Office of Justice Programs of the Department of Public Safety has replaced the Crime Victim and Witness Advisory Council for developing model notices of the rights of crime victims.
Membership: 16 members (2 legislators, 1 district court judge, 1 county attorney, 1 public defender, 1 peace officer, 1 medical or osteopathic physician, 5 crime victims or crime victim assistance representatives, 3 public members, and a member appointed by the Minnesota General Crime Victims Coalition); appointed by commissioner of public safety in consultation with commissioner of corrections; 4-year terms; no compensation. (1991); 12 members in 1986; expanded by one member to 16 in 1993
