Mad Cow Disease Task Force

Active dates:March 2001- Appears to have expired
Minnesota Department of Agriculture
Function: Prevent Mad Cow Disease from developing in Minnesota, educating producers and processors about Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy and how it can be prevented. Develop a comprehensive responsive plan if BSE turned up in Minnesota or another state.
History: The Minnesota Department of Agriculture announced Apr 3, 2001 it had formed an inter-agency task force to coordinate state and federal efforts to prevent Mad Cow Disease. The highly contagious disease, which is also called BSE, wastes the brains of cattle and can be transferred to humans.

"The MDA and these other organizations have been working more or less independently on BSE for years, and we believe it's time to strengthen our inter-agency cooperation," MDA Meat Inspection Supervisor Kevin Elfering says. "The goal of this task force is to speak to farmers, the ag industry and consumers with a single voice about BSE and what is being done to keep America's food supply safe."
Subordinate to:
Minnesota Department of Agriculture
Membership: State and federal agriculture and health organizations: MN Dept. of Agriculture, MN Board of Animal Health, MN Dept. of Health, U of Minnesota's College of Veterinary Medicine, federal FDA, U.S. Dept. of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.
