Minnesota Commission on National and Community Service

Function:

The commission will implement a comprehensive state plan to provide services under sections 121.701 and 121.710 of federal law, pursue funding sources, coordinate volunteer learning service programs, administer the youth works grant program, establish an evaluation of program plan, administer the federal Americorps program, and report to the governor and legislature.

History:

Accoding to ServeMinnesota, "ServeMinnesota began in 1994 as the Minnesota Commission on National and Community Service, then housed within the Department of Children and Families, the State's designated recipient and administrator of funding for Minnesota's AmeriCorps program. In 2002, the Minnesota Legislature approved the organization becoming a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization with the broader mission of advancing national service and volunteerism across the state."

The 2013 ServeMinnesota Annual Report notes that: "ServeMinnesota is our state's Commission on National and Community Service and is responsible for administering federal AmeriCorps funds to programs throughout Minnesota."

The commission does not expire.

Membership:

Twenty-five members including the Commissioner of Education. The governor appoints twenty-four additional voting members. Three year terms. Quarterly meetings plus committee assignments.
