Governor's Committee on Minnesota's Mining Future

Function: Advise the Governor on ways to strengthen and develop a sustainable mining and minerals industry in Minnesota.
History: Governor Tim Pawlenty appointed a 15-member Committee on Minnesota's Mining Future in January 2004, to recommend actions that can be taken to strengthen and develop a sustainable, more diversified mining and minerals industry in Minnesota, and more specifically to:
• Evaluate government policies that affect the mining and minerals industries;
• Develop public policy strategies to enhance the growth of the mining and minerals industry; and
• Advise and serve as a catalyst for the development of partnerships between industry, institutions, funding groups, and state and federal resources and other entities.

The committee held its final meeting on August 9, 2004, at the Iron Range Resources office near Eveleth.

Governor
Membership: Eight public members appointed by the Governor that have experience in the mining industry, unions representing mining workers, and/or other relevant business, leadership, and economic development experience. Committee has fifteen members in total, those non-public including Commissioners of Iron Range Resources; Departments of Natural Resources, Employment, and Economic Development, and the Pollution Control Agency; MN U.S. Senators and the U.S. Representative for MN Eighth Congressional District.
