Minnesota Board of Veterinary Medicine

Function:

The mission of the Board is to promote, preserve, and protect the health, safety and welfare of the public and animals through the effective control and regulation of the practice of veterinary medicine. The Board licenses veterinarians, registers veterinary corporations in Minnesota, and investigates complaints concerning them.

History:

The board was established in 1893 as the State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners (see General Laws of Minnesota 1893, chapter 31, section 3). The name was changed, in 1965, to State Veterinary Examining Board (see Laws of Minn. 1965, chap. 204, sec. 2). In 1975 it became the Board of Veterinary Medicine (see Laws of Minn. 1975, chap. 271, sec. 3). It then became, in 1991, the State Board of Veterinary Medicine (see Laws of Minn. 1991, chap. 199, art. 1, sec. 48. The Legislature made some changes to board membership and duties in 2026 (see Laws of Minn. 2026, chap. 53, sec. 29-31).

Membership:

As of 2026, the board consists of nine members, all appointed by the governor: two public members, five licensed veterinarians, one licensed veterinary technician, and one additional licensed veterinarian or licensed veterinary technician.
