University Study Commission

Function: The commission was created to study and consider the finances, budgets, financial operations and legal status of the University of Minnesota with the purpose of improving the legislature's understanding and consideration of university financial and operational matters.

The Commission was mandated to report its findings and recommendations to the legislature not later than November 15, 1972, and was able to supplement them thereafter until January 15,1973.
History: The commission was directed to act from the time its members were appointed until the commencement of the next regular session of the legislature. The report was mandated by November 15, 1972.

The commission held its first meeting on October 29, 1971. There were eight public hearings from November 1972 to May 2, 1972. The report was submitted November 10, 1972.
Membership: The commission consisted of 15 members; five members of the house of representatives appointed by the speaker, five members of the senate appointed by the committee on committees and five persons appointed by the governor from among the interested public. The members of the senate were: Sen. John Tracy Anderson, Sen. Edward J. Gearty (Chairman), Sen. Jerome M. Hughes, Sen. J. A. Josefson, Sen. John L. Olson. The members of the house of representatives were: Rep. Neil S. Haugerud, Rep. Verne E. Long, Rep. Rodney N. Searle, Rep. Vernon L. Sommerdorf, Rep. Charles R. Weaver (Vice Chairman). The members appointed by the governor were: Karl Grittner, Lyle Farmer, Marjorie A. Loeffler (Secretary), John M. Warder, and Robert MacGregor.
