Board of Teacher Standards and Certification

Function: To oversee teacher certification in Minnesota. The Board had the power to admit teachers into the profession as well as revoke certificates when necessary.

History:
The 1973 legislature moved the responsibility of certifying teachers from the state board of education to a newly created Teacher Standards and Certification Commission (1973 Minn. Laws Chap. 749). The authority to certify superintendents and principals remained with the state board of education.
In 1975 the Teacher Standards and Certification Commission changed to the Board of Teacher Standards and Certification (1975 Minn. Laws Chap. 271).
In 1976 Minn. Laws Chap. 222, the name was changed to the Minnesota Board of Teaching.
Membership:
In 1974 the Board had 15 members. The 1975 Legislature increased the number of public members to the Board from two to four.
