Minnesota Security Hospital
Active dates:1907 -
Function: The Minnesota Security Hospital is established for the purpose of providing a secure treatment facility for persons who may be committed there by courts, or otherwise, or transferred there by the commissioner of human services, and for persons who are found to be mentally ill while confined in any correctional facility, or who may be found to be mentally ill and dangerous, and the commissioner shall supervise and manage the same as in the case of other state hospitals.
History:
In 1907 the Minnesota Legislature authorized establishment of an Asylum for the Dangerous Insane, to be operated in conjunction with the St. Peter State Hospital; separate buildings for this institution (now known as the Minnesota Security Hospital) were completed in 1911. The Minnesota Security Hospital received patients (men only) committed by the courts or transferred from other hospitals and correctional institutions.
Its name was changed in 1957 (Laws 1957 c196). The Minnesota Security Hospital was maintained in conjunction with the St. Peter State Hospital, but since at least the mid-1960s it had a separate medical director.
