Great Lakes Protection Fund Board of Directors

Function: Awards grants to support projects that protect and restore the Great Lakes.
History: The Great Lakes Protection Fund was established in 1989 by the governors of eight states bordering the Great Lakes. The governors of the Great Lakes states pledged $97 million to create the Fund to help protect and restore their shared Great Lakes resources. It is a private, nonprofit corporation and a permanent environmental endowment that supports collaborative actions to improve the health of the Great Lakes ecosystem. The Fund is the first private, permanent endowment created to benefit a specific ecosystem.

Membership: 16 members; Each governor appoints 2 members to serve two-year terms.
