End of Life Care Commission

Function: Study ways to improve the care of the dying. One purpose is to develop policy recommendations for improving health care for dying patients.
History: The Commission was funded by a $455,000, two-year grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and was a joint project of the Minnesota Department of Health, Allina Health Systems, Fairview Health Services and HealthPartners.

After 20 months of study, the commission released guidelines - plus recommendations for education, public policy and access to care - to address treatment; physical and emotional pain relief; communication during the dying process; and families' grief.
