Social Work Licensing Board

Function: Adopts and enforces rules for licensure of social workers and for regulation of their professional conduct.
History: The Social Work Licensing Board was created by the 1987 Legislature to adopt and enforce rules for the licensure of social workers, and to regulate their professional conduct (from a press release dated September 11, 1987).
From 1987 to 1991, the Office of Social Work and Mental Health Boards coordinated "the administrative and staff functions of the boards of social work, marriage and family therapy, and unlicensed mental health service providers" (148B.02).
Membership: 10 members (6 licensed social workers, 3 public members, and 1 school social worker licensed by the Board of Teaching); appointed by governor; 4-year terms; per diem and expenses; members file with Ethical Practices Board.
