The council advises the Commissioner of Education on nonpublic educational aids as well as other matters affecting nonpublic education and nonpublic schools. The council is also authorized to recognize educational accrediting agencies for purposes relating to Minnesota's Compulsory Instruction Law.
Created in 1985. In 1987 renamed, made subject to Minn. Stat. 15.0575 instead of Minn. Stat. 15.059, and given additional authority relating to accrediting agencies. The Nonpublic Education Council was reviewed by the Legislative Commission on Planning and Fiscal Policy (LCPFP) in 2013 as part of their biennial duty required by Minn. Stat. 3.885 Subd. 11. The LCPFP's 2013 Recommendations called for keeping the council.
15 members (representing various areas of the state, various methods of providing nonpublic education, knowledgeable about nonpublic education); appointed by commissioner of education; terms governed by Minn. Stat. 15.0575; compensation governed by Minn. Stat. 15.0575.
