Attorney General Opinions

This collection of more than 40,000 Minnesota Attorney General Opinions was digitized from microfiche by the Attorney General Library. Some opinions in this collection were digitized from the Legislative Reference Library's print notebook collection.

Opinions in this collection span 1861 to 2006. Opinions are available online from the Office of the Attorney General from 1993 to the present

Due to the nature of the source materials and the digitization process, errors are inherent to this collection. Search results may vary.

Search the collection below by keyword, subject, or date. Keep in mind these searching tips and limitations:

  • Keyword searching: Many opinions in this collection are difficult to read and some include handwritten notes. As a result, keyword searches have limitations and may not identify every relevant opinion. For some opinions, better quality scans may be found in Reports and Biennial Reports of the Attorney General.
  • Metadata accuracy: There may be errors in metadata, particularly in the date field. Additionally, “subject” and “description” metadata are not available for many opinions.
  • Subject searchingSubject codes assigned to opinions are derived from a Subject Index developed and used by the Attorney General. The database search is designed to account for irregularities that exist in the Subject Index, including variations in capitalization, hyphenation, spelling, and cross-reference subject codes. However, users might still encounter inaccuracies.

Content alert: Due to the nature of these historical materials, there may be occurrences of harmful, offensive, or misrepresentative language. In these cases, the Library has not censored or altered the original historical record.

Contact the Minnesota Legislative Reference Library for help searching or locating a specific opinion.
