In 1983, the legislature establishes the Department of Energy and Economic Development. This newly-named department replaces the Department of Energy, Planning and Development. The Department of Energy and Economic Development is restructured in 1987 by Laws of Minnesota 1987, chapter 312, article 1. This law gives the energy functions of the department over to the Public Service Department, and creates the Trade and Economic Development Department. These changes are effective May 29, 1987 and codified at Minnesota Statues 216C.
