Apprenticeships and Job Training
On-the-job training programs continue to be an important workforce tool in the state. There are several pathways available for occupational training opportunities, a few of which are mentioned in reports this month.
The Minnesota Dual-Training Pipeline program works with employers to identify the current and future workforce skills needed for their industry. The program facilitates dual training in higher education and on-the-job settings for several industries, such as: advanced manufacturing, agriculture, and health care. Industries and corresponding higher education programs are listed in the new Minnesota Dual-Training Pipeline: Related Instruction Inventory report.
A component of MnDOT's civil rights programs, is the On-the-Job Training Supportive Services Program. This program strives to "increase the pool of qualified minorities, women and disadvantaged individuals in the highway heavy construction trades," among other goals. The Highway Construction Training and Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) Program report explains details about the program's focus on highway heavy training for construction and Tribal construction, a summer training program for youth, and training for small business contractors.
Another report with a focus on the construction industry is Building a Strong Minnesota: An Analysis of Minnesota's Union Construction Industry. One of the areas addressed is the impact of union apprenticeship programs. The report states that "joint labor-management programs train 93 percent of all construction apprentices in Minnesota" and that union construction job wages rival those of workers with a bachelor's degree.
