Republican National Convention
With the arrival of the National Republican Convention in St. Paul in September, it has
been 116 years since the Twin Cities has hosted a national political party
convention. According to CQ Press's National Party Conventions 1831-2004,
Minneapolis hosted the Republican convention in June of 1892, nominating
President Benjamin Harrison to run for a second term. However, it is certain
that the security issues for Saint Paul in 2008 are a much bigger concern than
for Minneapolis in 1892. July's Homeland
Security Today article about security at the upcoming Republican
National Convention (RNC), "Twin Cities Security: Readying
for Republicans," states: "The convention, which has been designated a
National Special Security Event (NSSE), is seen by St. Paul Assistant Police
Chief Matthew Bostrom as both a unique opportunity for the area's police and
citizens and as a "prize target" for potential terrorists." In addition to
security concerns, the National Republican Convention is expected to have a
large economic impact on the area. Economic
Impacts of 2008 Republican National Convention by the MN Department of Employment and Economic
Development predicts $148 million in new spending, 2,800 jobs, $100 million in
wages, and $162 million in gross state product gains to the state.
