The Real ID Act
The Real ID Act of 2005 requires states to meet stringent federal standards for state-issued drivers' licenses and identification cards by May 11, 2008. The standards will require states to check identity against six federal databases and to reissue all existing state drivers' licenses and identification by May 2013. Since its passage, many states have passed resolutions demanding changes or declaring opposition to the Real ID Act.
