NCSL Reports
Founded in 1975, the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) (http://www.ncsl.org) is a bipartisan organization serving legislators and legislative staff in the 50 states. NCSL provides "research, technical assistance and opportunities for policymakers to exchange ideas on the most pressing state issues" through publications, an extensive website, conferences, and personal contact. Their new blog, "The Thicket," (http://ncsl.typepad.com/the_thicket/) and podcast, "The Conference Report," (http://www.ncsl.org/programs/press/podcastCR.htm) take advantage of new media to deliver interesting news stories about state legislatures.
NCSL staff members excel at writing overviews of important legislative issues - perfect for busy legislators or legislative staff members who need to understand an issue quickly. Each month the Legisbriefs (http://www.ncsl.org/legis/lbriefs/2006/lbriefs2006.htm) series compares states in two-page overviews. Recent issues covered the definition of a lobbyist, cybercrime, safety belts, and truancy prevention programs.
