Outdoor Adventures
If you made it to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness last year, you weren't alone. This month we added an April 2021 U.S. Forest Service report to our collection which tracks BWCAW visits from 2016-2020. The report notes a 16% increase in annual visitors from 2019 to 2020. Many outfitters up north indicate this year is expected to be another busy one, and perhaps it's no wonder that even as pandemic restrictions subside, the BWCAW would still draw many visitors. As Sigurd Olson wrote, "there is a satisfaction in reaching some point on the map in spite of wind and weather, in keeping a rendezvous with some campsite that in the morning seemed impossible of achievement. In a canoe the battle is yours and yours alone."
While canoeing adventures in the BWCAW are hard to match, there's no shortage of parks and trails throughout Minnesota. The Greater Minnesota Regional Parks and Trails Commission Strategic Plan, also published April 2021, might inspire you to explore a new one this summer. This plan outlines the commission's strategic thinking, serving as an update to their 2015 strategic plan. With the adoption of this plan, the commission aims to ensure "a high-quality outdoor recreation experience for all users."
Another group thinking about the outdoors this past year was the Minnesota Outdoor Recreation Task Force. Convened by the Department of Natural Resources and the tourism office Explore Minnesota in the spring of 2020, the task force studied "how to bring measured growth, increased and equitable access, and a higher quality of outdoor recreation opportunities to Minnesotans and visitors." Their March 2021 recommendations call for the creation of an Office of Outdoor Recreation, charged in part with "increasing participation in outdoor recreation, especially by people in underrepresented populations; and improving coordination among all of Minnesota’s diverse outdoor interests to enhance the profile of the outdoor recreation sector in the state."
