Minnesota's Medical Cannabis Law is One Year Old
A year ago this month, Minnesota’s medical cannabis law took effect. The program is still in its nascent phase, but the Minnesota Department of Health’s Office of Medical Cannabis issued its first report on the experience of participants last month. Of the 435 people who joined the program between July 2015 and September 2015, more than half responded to a survey designed by the Office of Medical Cannabis, inviting them to share how the program has affected their health. This data is paired with responses from patients’ certifying health care practitioners, who reported on their own impressions of the impact medical cannabis has had for their patients.
Minnesota is now among the 25 states, along with the District of Columbia and Guam, that have a medical marijuana and cannabis program. A summary of state medical marijuana laws from the National Conference of State Legislatures details the particulars of and differences between state programs.
One change is already on the horizon for this new program. Starting on August 1, patients with intractable pain will now be eligible to participate. This decision from the Minnesota Department of Health came after a period of study and public comment. A vast majority of commenters recommended adding intractable pain to the list of qualifying conditions, though an MDH panel of clinicians recommended it not be added. The Commissioner's decision to add the condition puts Minnesota in line with many other states where chronic pain is a common reason medical marijuana is prescribed.
