Open-Access Books on Race & Justice

This time of year, we typically put out a summer reading list of special titles the Legislative Reference Library has received in the past year. Oftentimes they center around a relevant theme for that year. With the Library's physical space closed for the time being as the state continues to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic, we’re highlighting easily accessible online resources for summer reading with a focus on the topics of race and justice.

The University of Minnesota Press recently opened up a collection of titles published over the past twenty years relating to racial justice. The Reading for Racial Justice collection titles are available free online through August 31, 2020. Many books in the collection have a Minnesota connection:

Degrees of Freedom: The Origins of Civil Rights in Minnesota, 1865-1912, by William D. Green
Hope in the Struggle: A Memoir, by Josie R. Johnson
Voices of Rondo: Oral Histories of Saint Paul's Historic Black Community, as told to Kate Cavett
Survival Schools: The American Indian Movement and Community Education in the Twin Cities, by Julie L. Davis.

This summer, the Friends of the Saint Paul Public Library, along with other organizations, is featuring another book on this topic: A Good Time for the Truth: Race in Minnesota, edited by Sun Yung Shin and published by the Minnesota Historical Society Press. The complete text is available for free unlimited download until August 23 through One Book | One Minnesota, a statewide book club that invites Minnesotans of all ages to read a common title and come together virtually to enjoy, reflect, and discuss.
