Changing Capitol News Coverage
A new report from the Pew Research Center, Total Number of U.S. Statehouse Reporters Rises, but Fewer Are on the Beat Full Time, finds that while the number of statehouse reporters has increased 11% since 2014, the number of full-time Capitol reporters has decreased. Minnesota reflects these national trends with an increase from 40 to 46 Capitol reporters while also seeing a substantial decline in the number of full-time reporters in the last seven years from 29 to 19, according to Pew’s analysis.
Pew reports that an increase in nonprofit news organizations, locally focused digital outlets, and “ideological news outlets” more than offset significant staff cutbacks in the traditional newspaper business. Reporters from more traditional Minnesota news outlets such as the Pioneer Press, the Star Tribune, AP, MPR, WCCO, and KSTP that have covered Minnesota politics for decades have been joined in recent years by reporters from MinnPost, Axios Twin Cities, Minnesota Reformer, and The Uptake.
A comparison of the 2022 Capitol News Coverage Directory to earlier editions illustrates this shift. The oldest edition that the Library has collected is from 1989. Bill Salisbury is the only reporter included both the 1989 and the 2022 edition of the directory, although the 1989 directory does include other seasoned reporters no longer on the Capitol beat.
