Traffic Safety
Minnesota has experienced an average of one traffic fatality per day so far this year. 2015 saw the highest number of traffic deaths in the last five years and unfortunately, the final 2016 numbers may exceed those of last year. The LRL has recently received several reports from the MN Office of Traffic Safety related to the safety of Minnesota’s roads.
Minnesota Motor Vehicle Crash Facts (2015) provides data on traffic crash trends, fatality rates, factors affecting crashes, and includes analysis of the economic costs to Minnesota. Not surprisingly, the top four factors in Minnesota road fatalities were speed, distractions, impaired driving, and failing to wear a seat belt. The Office's Minnesota Annual Report provides an overview of traffic-related safety issues including the state’s cornerstone traffic safety program, Toward Zero Deaths, which is in its second decade as a partnership between state agencies.
Several of the Library's newly acquired reports take a more focused look at traffic safety. The High-Risk Driver Analysis report summarizes results of a survey on the attitudes and behaviors of Minnesota drivers, with particular focus on those who participated in high or moderate-risk behaviors such as drinking and driving, not wearing a seat belt, speeding, and texting or internet use. Minnesota Motor Vehicle Impaired Driving Facts presents detailed data tables related to driving under the influence. It includes a 14-page chronology of Minnesota impaired driving legislation since 1911 as well as information about the state's ignition interlock program.
The Minnesota Ignition Interlock Program Evaluation: Final Report analyzes the program's participation and performance outcomes and makes recommendations for future policy action. For instance, the study found that program participation reduces recidivism and recommends that the program expand.
