Keeping up with Congress
What happens at the federal level can have a big effect on what happens in individual states. But it can be hard to get balanced information on what is happening.
The Legislative Library receives two invaluable, balanced, weekly journals that cover Congressional action in depth. National Journal features long, overview articles on the public policy issues being discussed in Washington DC. CQ Weekly, Congressional Quarterly’s magazine on government, commerce and politics, covers activity on major bills, includes a section summarizing the past week’s legislative action and notes key current and future committee meetings.
Several magazines address an issue of current congressional interest for each issue. Recent issues of Congressional Digest, which features pro and con essays written by U.S. House and Senate members, include coverage of executive compensation, credit card reform, mortgage foreclosures, and the Obama economic agenda. CQ Researcher also features articles on a single topic; recent topics were nuclear disarmament, CIA interrogation, gays in the military, health care reform, and legalizing marijuana.
