Indicator 17: Tobacco Use

Goal: Minnesotans will be healthy.
Rationale: Smoking and tobacco use have been shown to cause or worsen many diseases.
About this indicator: Current tobacco use among Minnesotans has declined gradually but significantly since the early 1990s. In 2009, 16.8 percent were current smokers. This was not significantly different than the 2008 figure.

For comparison: The nationwide smoking rate in 2009 was 17.9 percent, not significantly different from the Minnesota rate.

Encouraging figures show a decline in the rate of smoking among Minnesota 12th-graders, from 42.0 percent in 1998 to 23.0 percent in 2007.
